We’re Playing Basketball
Our town has some great programs for kids. We recently signed Josh up for Sports Intro (which covers the basics on a lot of different sports, Intro to Basketball, and Intro to Flag Football. Josh started his Basketball classes a couple of weeks ago. It is So funny watching four year olds learning how to play basketball. They are all over the place. Josh is usually on the floor as he loves to slide to catch a ball or catch a ball and fall to the floor. They break the kids into three different groups; dribbling, passing and shooting. Of course the kids love to shoot, but they have a good time regardless of what station they are at.
One of the biggest things that has always worried me about my kids in sports is the “Parent Factor”. My neighbor is one of my best buds, but he and many like him get Way too serious about the games their kids are involved in. The baseball games that I’ve seen my neighbor’s kid play in have truly been an experience in watching how parents shouldn’t act.
The parents at Josh’s basketball classes right now are all very nice to each other and it really is a great atmosphere. Last week as Amy and I were laughing and chatting with some of the parents around us it hit me that in a few years when our kids get older the mood probably won’t be as light hearted and friendly. Oh well, I guess there is no reason worrying about that now.
Here are a few pictures from Josh’s first night. The gym was dark and I didn’t do a good job snapping pictures. I hope to have better pictures soon.
Josh gets some instruction.
Nate tries to get a better look.
Josh does a little ball stretch while getting instruction.
Watching the kids play tired Nate out.

I can’t wait to see you coaching…..or just cheering….and trying not to get too involved! Speaking of basketball, us old people should get together a little pick-up game. We’ll limit the game to Old, Fat, Out of shape, fogies like ourselves.

Yeah. I know. I know. It will take a lot of will power to keep things reined in.

Hey, Alan! Yes, you are correct that the atmosphere probably won’t be as light hearted in a few years…I coached rec. youth soccer for 3 seasons and had just about the same group of girls from ages 6/7-9/10…it started out with parents taking pics and cheering for everyone….then by the last season I actually had a parent expelled from a game for cursing a ref IN FRONT OF the children…and there was so much pressure put on the kids that is was just sad to see how upset they’d get when they “messed up” and to hear the things the parents would say…thus it was my last time doing it and I refused to go on with the same group to the next level. When our little boys are in sports I think we will be OK and not go crazy…if we start to, we can smack each other back to our senses.

Hey Alan,
Josh looks so cute. Its great to get them involved, but I have to say you are right about the parents. Tanner has played 2 t-ball seasons now. Some of the parents are great, but you have just a few that can ruin it for everybody. Take care talk to ya later.
